Welcome back fellow artists!
I am bringing you a new online class called, “Creature Design – Textures and Rendering!”
This one is all about rendering details for this gruesome looking fellow. I love adding lots of neat little textures and imperfections to my illustrations. It’s probably why I can’t go very long without drawing a monster or two. They offer a lot of opportunities to be creative and experiment as you draw.
It’s always nice when it doesn’t have to look like anything anyone has ever seen before. That is pure freedom to create! I also tend to find that these types of illustrations are great for when I am in a metal rut.
It solves the issue of needing to try something new without stepping away from my art. This is no end to the possibilities you can come up with when drawing a creature concept.
One of my favorite ways to create these is to pick 2 or 3 living organisms and mash them together into a new creature design. Some of my favorite references are aquatic life, reptiles, and insects. You can even include elements of plant life. Give it a try, it’s actually pretty fun stuff!
I explain a lot of these techniques in my full creature design course, “How to Improve Your Creature Designs – Step by Step.”
You can view that here if you like. It includes the new class that I just created as well. Get it here on Gumroad…

In the new class I show you how to draw a creature concept but we focus much more on the shadows, textures, and rendering.
I get a lot of questions around this topic and it seems like many of you are confused about how to go about adding these little details. I know how you feel.
I was confused about it for many years as well. To be honest I still get that way from time to time. We all do. That is why we must always push ourselves to grow and learn. When we stop growing we get bored and then our art suffers.
The trick is always staying excited about making the next thing. So you might be wondering, How do I keep that excitement going?
My quick answer is, Experimentation! If you are always making time to experiment with your style then you are always developing, always learning, and therefor always excited to keep going.
Another reason why I really enjoy drawing monster, aliens, and creature concepts. The experimentation of it is exciting.
So if you enjoy creating some cool monster art like I do, then maybe this class is for you. Here is an introduction video for you to see what it’s like –
