Hello My Fellow Creatives!

I am back to my old ways. Creating custom brushes! This time it is all things foliage and plant themed. I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner. These are going to be some handy brushes to have.

If you’ve ever tried to draw a jungle scene then you know how time consuming it can be. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun to draw those little details but every now and then you may need some reference or a few templates to move the process along. Hopefully these will help you in that area.

Plus, when making custom brushes in Clip Studio Paint, I get so many new ideas. Something about the experimentation process is very gratifying to me. I might draw 5 bad versions of a brush and then BAM! One works and it feels like magic.

The Ribbon Feature in Clip Studio Paint is Awesome!

One of the reasons for this is that Clip Studio Paint has a fantastic Ribbon Feature. This along with the program supporting solid fills allows us to create some pretty dynamic brushes.

The vines in the scene above were created with the Ribbon Feature in CSP. Once the initial setup is done, they are as simple as a stroke of the pen. This eliminates some of the resistance when drawing them in. More vines? Sure!

Then it sparks other ideas such as ropes, necklaces, metal wires, and of course Spider-Webs!

That one is a throw back but I am still pretty proud of it. It works so well and gives me those old school Spider-Man vibes every time I use it.

Benefits of Solid Fill Brushes in CSP

When trying to populate a scene, the solid fill aspect is so much more convenient to work with. I noticed this when trying to draw this next scene. Since the brushes are back filled with white they overlap nicely. This combined with layers made the process way faster.

This scene barely took me 20 minutes to create and that is with a bit of hand drawing over the top.

A scene like this drawn entirely by hand would have taken me a full day at least. Of course the hand drawn version would have had much more variation and life to it but this one could be a time saver when needed.

Like many templates and brushes we have to learn when to use them and when to pull back so they don’t overpower the art. Generally the more you hand draw over the top, the more it begins to blend with the work.

I have more ideas for these brushes and I will be adding more to this set very soon. Let me know what ideas you have and what brushes would help you out the most!
