Art Year in Review 2016 by Ram Studios Comics

Art Year in Review 2016

Best Art of 2016
Best Art of 2016

Well another year in the books and it went by all too fast. Now it is time to reflect and make some well needed improvements to my art. I am decently happy with some of my creations of this year but I have also found some real chinks in my armor. I don’t want to sound negative but I feel it is an integral part of growing one’s art abilities to find our flaws. To fix something you must first acknowledge it’s presence. And it is easy to look the other way when our work is less than perfect. A bad habit to get into if you want to improve.

So here are some of the things I will be working on this year and what I see wrong with my current work. First and foremost I will be focusing on my proportions. Exaggerating features is common in comics and science fiction illustrations but it must be kept in check or your art will border on the realm of amateurish. So to hone my skills and perception in that arena I will be doing lots of figure drawing studies. I don’t think there is any better excercise for that problem.  Unless I can get my hands on one of those machines from the Matrix where you can just upload the data to your brain box.

The next thing I want to improve this year will be my knowledge in adding colors. I think a few of my pieces came out nice but my ability with the coloring process could be much better. I am confident with the application of the colors and digital painting but I need to know more about moods, color balances, color theory, and all that jazz. I have always enjoyed creating the line work the most but now it is time to grow past that.

And finally, I want to improve my backgrounds and compositions. Drawing cool characters is great but you can’t bring them to life without amazing backgrounds. So I will be doing lots of studies where I break down the composition from all my favorite comic book panels. Don’t worry, I won’t steal any bodies work. I will just study the work and figure what my scenes are lacking.

There are lots of things I can complain about when it comes to getting better at my craft but I don’t want you to think I am an unhappy camper. I am extremely grateful for where I am at with my skill set. I just really want to be the very best that I can. So I am excited to learn all that I can in 2017 and I will do my best to share that process along the way. So if you enjoy comics like I do, please stick around! We can learn together.  😉

Dragon Scale Brushes for Clip Studio Paint / Manga Studio 5

Clip Studio Paint / Manga Studio 5 Custom Brush Demonstration

Dragon Scales and Spikes Brush Test
Dragon Scales and Spikes Brush Test

Here is a sample from the new brushes that I created for Clip Studio Paint Pro / Manga Studio 5. These are some of the Dragon Scales and Spike brushes. This little mess you see here was created in about 15 minutes so don’t judge me yet!  I just want to test them out and see what I can create with them.  Like anything else, the more that I use them the better I will get.  I hope anyways!  I actually don’t think this came out too bad for just playing around.  Imagine if I actually started with a good sketch.

So I just wanted to give you a quick demonstration of these brushes and let you know how they work if you decide to try them or already have them.  Basically they are a two tone effect. The brighter side of the effect will be your foreground color and the darker side will be the background color. ( The swatch that you see in Black is the background color in this example. )

Then once you put down enough of the texture to create your effect, you need to bring it out further with things like a soft brush set to “Linear Burn” for shadows and “Glow Dodge” for highlights.  This will help to bring out the effects without covering up the details like “Normal” mode will.  You can also add shadow colors with “Multiply” as well for a nice effect.

The Spike brush goes with the push of the pen so keep that in mind for getting them in the right place. The brushes used in this demonstration are here –

019 Dragon Scales

020 Dragon Skin

021 Spike Brush

022 Dragon Scale Trim Brush

And a Soft Airbrush

You can get this set here on my Gumroad if you like – https://gum.co/TQPbf

And let me know what you come up with if you do! 🙂

Clip Studio Paint Pro Custom Brushes

Clip Studio Paint Pro – Custom Brushes

Manga Studio Brushes Clip Studio Paint Pro Brush Set
Manga Studio Brushes Clip Studio Paint Pro Brush Set

I am currently working on a new set of custom brushes  for Clip Studio Paint Pro and Manga Studio 5.  These brushes will be to enhance your digital painting efforts and some will be great time savers.  There will be some stamp effects but most of these will be more of a texture and effects set. I am currently at about 20 brushes into the creation process but the complete set will be 50 brushes and some background patterns by the time it is complete.

You can get the set and the available brushes now and get a reduced rate for pre-purchasing them.  It helps me to build and audience while bringing in working capital and you get to be the first to have these brushes.  You can also give vital constructive feedback during this process.  So if you notice something that could be better I am all ears.  Likewise, if you think of a neat brush concept then I can do my best to create it and add it to this set or another.

There are 18 brushes available right now and counting….

Current Brushes are –

001 Fur Brush

002 Smooth Paint and Blend Brush

003 Chalk Brush Watercolor

Welcome to The Ram Studios Comics Official Website

Hello everyone and thank you for stopping by.  Robert A. Marzullo here and I wanted to officially welcome you to our new website.  On this site you will see artwork that I create and share on comics, digital painting, 3D sculpting, and video tutorials.  This will be a learning platform as much as it will be an online portfolio.  I have lots of work ahead of me so please be patient.  It will take time for me to get this site the way that I would like.

If you have any suggestions on what you think would make this a better experience then please share.  I always value the opinions of others.  You must remember, I am just some guy in a basement studio with a dream.  So sometimes I can lose sight of what others might be thinking on the other end of this digital pipeline.  It is your job to remind me!😉

So now for  me to get to work and start building this site.  I will be uploading images, step by step tutorials, links to video files, and blog posts for updates on what is going on.  So more is on the way and thanks again for being part of this!

Good luck with your art and keep up the hard work
