How to Draw Comic Style Hair – 3 Ways – Narrated Lesson

How to draw comic style hair 3 ways
How to draw comic style hair 3 ways

Here is my next lesson for Drawing Comic Style Hair 3 different ways.

This started as a request from one of my Patreon supporters. I have done some other tutorials on my Youtube channel but this one is a more in depth look with art files to work along with.

I have struggled with getting the right look for hair for many years so I know what others mean when they say they just cannot seem to draw it properly. It is one of those things you will always be studying to get better at. Just like hands, faces, and feet. ( Yuck! I hate drawing feet. lol )

So don’t beat yourself up in the process and just take your time. Draw from as many resources as possible to gain your perspective on the subject. Great artists are not made overnight. It takes lots of time and lots of studies!

In this lesson I will walk you through my process step by step in real time. You will see how I built up the shapes and design the hair style I am after. I then show you how I place the shadows and add in the render lines or texture of the hair. I also talk about the importance of simplifying the process for your comic book style art.

So I hope this lesson will shed some well needed light on that subject matter for you and keep in mind that I am here to help. If you have any questions or requests for future content I am listening!

Figure Drawing Foundations – Proportions by Clayton Barton

Hello fellow comic art guys and gals. I have a pretty cool offer for you if you find yourself wanting to get better at drawing comic book hero proportions. We have all struggled in that department a time or two and it never hurts to work on that subject as much as possible. So here is just the thing to get those mental gears working on that topic.

Figure Drawing Foundations – Proportions by Clayton Barton. Clayton has done a stand up job at breaking down the barriers when it comes to understanding proportions. He goes into great detail on this subject and sheds light on this tricky topic. He also gives you a nice variety of tiers to choose from. Since one size doesn’t fit all, you can choose from a few packages to suit your level of interest for this topic.

In the various packages you get video walkthroughs, PDF’s, access to a virtual classroom, and lots of finely crafted lessons. I have been drawing a long time and I must admit that I am finding some great tips and tricks in here that I needed to learn. He has done an excellent job at covering all the bases to understanding body proportions and character designs. He breaks it down in an easy to follow manner which is so valuable when doing these types of studies.

So if you need that level up on your character work this is the course content to check out. And please share the work. Clayton is an amazing teacher and to keep him creating great content sharing the work is essential!

You can get his content here and good luck with your art!

Art Year in Review 2016 by Ram Studios Comics

Art Year in Review 2016

Best Art of 2016
Best Art of 2016

Well another year in the books and it went by all too fast. Now it is time to reflect and make some well needed improvements to my art. I am decently happy with some of my creations of this year but I have also found some real chinks in my armor. I don’t want to sound negative but I feel it is an integral part of growing one’s art abilities to find our flaws. To fix something you must first acknowledge it’s presence. And it is easy to look the other way when our work is less than perfect. A bad habit to get into if you want to improve.

So here are some of the things I will be working on this year and what I see wrong with my current work. First and foremost I will be focusing on my proportions. Exaggerating features is common in comics and science fiction illustrations but it must be kept in check or your art will border on the realm of amateurish. So to hone my skills and perception in that arena I will be doing lots of figure drawing studies. I don’t think there is any better excercise for that problem. ¬†Unless I can get my hands on one of those machines from the Matrix where you can just upload the data to your brain box.

The next thing I want to improve this year will be my knowledge in adding colors. I think a few of my pieces came out nice but my ability with the coloring process could be much better. I am confident with the application of the colors and digital painting but I need to know more about moods, color balances, color theory, and all that jazz. I have always enjoyed creating the line work the most but now it is time to grow past that.

And finally, I want to improve my backgrounds and compositions. Drawing cool characters is great but you can’t bring them to life without amazing backgrounds. So I will be doing lots of studies where I break down the composition from all my favorite comic book panels. Don’t worry, I won’t steal any bodies work. I will just study the work and figure what my scenes are lacking.

There are lots of things I can complain about when it comes to getting better at my craft but I don’t want you to think I am an unhappy camper. I am extremely grateful for where I am at with my skill set. I just really want to be the very best that I can. So I am excited to learn all that I can in 2017 and I will do my best to share that process along the way. So if you enjoy comics like I do, please stick around! We can learn together. ¬†ūüėČ

How to Draw Superheroes Step by Step

How to Draw Superheroes Step by Step

Welcome to Ram Studios Comics.  Here you will find step by step instructions on how to draw superheroes.  The lessons on this site will be easy to understand.  I will cover all the basics of drawing comics and the  characters within them.  I believe that anyone can become a great artist if they love to create.  It is the passion that drives us not the talent.  If you love to create comics then you can do it!

On this site you will find simple drawing methods.  Sometimes they will appear to be basic and maybe even boring at your current level of artistry.  But, I assure you it all serves a purpose.  By studying the basics we can make the complex drawings easier to accomplish.  Superhero drawings are complex when we try to draw them at first.  After learning about the smaller parts to the whole, it becomes much easier to do.

You can also head over to my Gumroad and get my course on How to Improve Your Figure Drawing Step by Step here –

how to draw superheroes

How Long will it Take me to Learn Superhero Anatomy?

I get this type of question all the time. ¬†How do I learn figure drawing? ¬†How long did it take you to learn how to draw superheroes? And the list goes on and on. ¬†There is no quick answer to these questions and there is no quick road to success. ¬†It takes years to develop the skills to draw the body well. ¬†I also cannot proclaim to know if you will learn quicker or slower than I did. ¬†All I can tell you is that drawing the human form properly is hard work. ¬†But, like I said previously, “The passion drives us, not the talent!” ¬†The talent is a by product of the passion. ¬†So be ready to work hard and also be thankful that there is not an easy road to success. ¬†This is what makes your desired profession out of the reach of so many others. ¬†Like the old saying goes, “If it was easy, everyone would do it!”

To get started, head over to our step by step section where you can find study guides.

Step by Step – Drawing Lessons

More lessons are on the way and let’s us know what you think of the site. ¬†As well as what you need help with in your own superhero drawing process!

Step by Step Drawing Lessons

Step by Step Drawing Lessons

step by step drawing of batman's mask
Batman’s mask Step by step Drawing Tutorial

Here is a quick step by step drawing of Batman’s mask. ¬†This character is a great way to test your level of drawing. ¬†He is very recognizable so the mistakes will be easy to spot. ¬†I always revisit popular characters for that reason. ¬†And they are just fun to draw. ¬†I will be doing lots of these so as I get them uploaded there will probably be a gallery or something dedicated to them. ¬†You can also make requests so that if and when I get some time I can create them.

This is the way that I have always gotten better at my drawings. ¬†I want to show other artists that this can be a great way to learn complex drawings for comics. ¬†By breaking down the simple parts like this, you can make those tough drawings easier to accomplish. ¬†That’s how I do it anyways.

Drawing Muscular Arms Step by Step Tutorial
Drawing Muscular Arms Step by Step Tutorial

And of course we can’t forget about the guns! ¬†Can’t have superheroes without big muscly arms. ūüėČ ¬†I will also be adding some more step by step drawing lessons on proportions as well. ¬†That is another sticky topic area for most of us. ¬†I constantly struggle with them myself. ¬†One of the reasons I like to create these is that I get better with my own artwork as I am sharing these with my fellow artists. ¬†Everyone wins that way!

So make sure to check back real soon for more step by step drawing lessons.  Share this blog post if you find it helpful and informative.  I need lots of feedback to make this site work for everyone.  More of these are on the way and let me know if you have any questions.  Good luck with your art!

Hello everyone and thank you for stopping by.  Robert A. Marzullo here and I wanted to officially welcome you to our new website.  On this site you will see artwork that I create and share on comics, digital painting, 3D sculpting, and video tutorials.  This will be a learning platform as much as it will be an online portfolio.  I have lots of work ahead of me so please be patient.  It will take time for me to get this site the way that I would like.

If you have any suggestions on what you think would make this a better experience then please share. ¬†I always value the opinions of others. ¬†You must remember, I am just some guy in a basement studio with a dream. ¬†So sometimes I can lose sight of what others might be thinking on the other end of this digital pipeline. ¬†It is your job to remind me!😉

So now for  me to get to work and start building this site.  I will be uploading images, step by step tutorials, links to video files, and blog posts for updates on what is going on.  So more is on the way and thanks again for being part of this!
